It's more that it kind of feels unique in a similar way to Magicka, it's a quirky little entry in this gaming niche that I didn't quite expect, but I'm glad I found. It reminds me a tiny bit of Magicka, but don't take that comparison too seriously. But both together makes this game feel very unique, at least in terms of the games I have played. This feature would be fun in a traditional hack and slash, even without the card-playing/deckbuilding gimmick. This allows you to handle a ridiculously large amount of enemies at once. Just like the game superhot, Book of Demons has a mode where enemies can only move/act if you are moving/taking an action. You just have to keep in mind that if you use up mana casting blue spells, and switch back to your spellbar with a bunch of green spells, some of the green spells will become disabled if you don't have enough mana in reserve.īut I haven't yet mentioned the feature that REALLY makes this game shine, IMO: Superhot mode. I hope the Developers read this post and fix this tinny oversight. All the monster groups have their wallpaper, except for the Gargoyles. So you can have one bar loaded up with offensive spells and one for defense, or really a very large variety of strategies. For those who don't know Book of Demons has seven different monster types, Skeletons, Zombies, Ghosts, Spiders, Goatmen, Demons and Gargoyles. You have 2 spell bars that you can easily and quickly switch between. Red cards are "item" cards and are typically familiar things like HP potion or Mana potionīlue cards are "spell" cards and are spells that consume mana (whatever is leftover/NOT reserved by green artifacts) to cast, and have a cooldown. Green cards are "artifacts" and have permanent effects - but reserve their mana cost as long as they are equipped, meaning you cannot spend that mana to cast (blue) spells The "cards" could just as easily be portrayed as magic scrolls and items. It's not really a deckbuilder, get that out of your head. But the game seems to have quite a bit of replay value and passes the $1/entertainment hour threshold easily, so it's a recommend. $25 is pretty steep for a game in this niche. The only reason it's a close call is the price tag. The Roguelike mode offers another level of challenge with permadeath, restricted healing, and even more obstacles to overcome. This is kind of a close call for me, but it's a recommend. Your character leaves footprints, which can be used to track your way back or notice paths already visited without opening the map.Ĭhallenging Endgame - On average, it takes about 10 hours to complete the campaign with a single class, but maxing out a character and mastering all of the higher Freeplay difficulty levels and Quests takes much longer. Points of interest are marked at the top of the screen and get revealed once you get closer. Sounds familiar? Inspired by the dark and gloomy atmosphere of the first Diablo game, Book of Demons is part tribute and part parody of the hack & slash classics.Ĭomfort of Gameplay - Many Book of Demons features were designed with gameplay comfort in mind. It’s a tale of good and evil about saving the world from the ultimate devilry. Hack & Slash in the world of the Paperverse - Book of Demons takes place in the Paperverse, a world that exists entirely inside of a pop-up book. Descend into the paper dungeons on your own, recruit computer-contro. There's often just not enough time to click-remove all obstacles, such as monster shields, enemy spells, poison, or knocked cards, so timing, card selection and order of execution are critical. Hellcard is a cooperative roguelike deckbuilder with Singleplayer and Multiplayer modes. Unique Mechanics - Simplified movement and combat mechanics are what sets Book of Demons apart from most other hack & slash games. It even learns the pace of your gaming and predicts the time to complete the next session. Features the Flexiscope engine, which allows you to divide the game into sessions of any size. Tailored sessions with Flexiscope - Book of Demons respects your time. Legendaries are the most awesome, but hard to acquire. Cards can be upgraded with runes and you can find many variants with diverse bonuses. The strategy lies in adapting your hand to each situation. Save the terror-stricken Paperverse from the clutches of the Archdemon himself!Ĭards and Deckbuilding - Book of Demons is not a card game, but items, spells, and skills are all expressed as cards. Wield magic cards and slay the armies of darkness in the Old Cathedral dungeons. Book of Demons is a Hack & Slash Deck-building hybrid in which you decide the length of quests.
